First, old pictures recalling Coventry's terrible ordeal, aftermath of that night in November 1940, when Nazi bombers blitzed the centre of the city, laying it in ruins. The skeleton of the Cathedral remained as gaunt witness of the attack. But close by, a new cathedral has arisen. Now, a sequel to the bombing. A number of young German craftsmen have volunteered to help in reconstructing the vestries of the bombed building. It's a work of peace, which the Germans call "Operation Reconciliation".
Herr Willy Brandt, Mayor of West Berlin visits Coventry to open a residential youth centre which West Germany has contributed part of the cost. It commemorates the late John F Kennedy and the centre, which bears his name will provide facilities for young people who come to stay in Coventry to serve the Cathedral and Community (more)
The most obvious contrast in Coventry features the two cathedrals. The old one stands as a monument to courage under the blitz of Nazi bombs in World War Two.
The present Supreme Allied Commander, General Norstad, visiting the city, doubtless compared it with the new Cathedral, now rising from the ashes of the past.
A Coventry factory, making armoured cars and other military equipment for NATO forces, pointed another sharp contrast. The General noted progress here with satisfaction, but when he was to address a public meeting later, he was at first shouted down in the hall by demonstrators. He appealed for freedom of speech, and obtained a hearing.

Most are still in Coventry City Transport cherry red/ivory colours, one is in a "hybrid" colour scheme mainly WMPTE cream/cherry red and others are in WMPTE blue/cream colours.
There's also one poppy red Midland Red bus.
COVENTRY solicitor Nick Button is celebrating his 50th birthday by reliving his teenage years, with the help of his first love - classic cars. The dad-of-two has organised a classic car run from Birmingham to Prague in a bid to raise £50,000 to help poorly children in the region.
