THE ROYAL SHOW
Royal Show
The Royal Show is an annual agricultural show/fair held by the Royal Agricultural Society of England every year since 1840. It is held in Stoneleigh Park (previously known as the National Agricultural Centre or NAC) near Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, England. Early venues for the show include Park Royal in London and Victoria Park, Leamington Spa.

The event encompasses all aspects of farming, food and rural life - from the best of British livestock to the latest business and technological innovations in the farming industry. Over 1,000 stands, world-class lifestock and equine classes attract visitors from over 100 countries.

On 3 April 2009, organisers said the 2009 show would be the last.

Royal Show 2007
More than 140,000 visitors were expected to attend the 2007 show;however, bad weather forced the show to close early for the first time in its history.Torrential rains left the showground saturated and police and show organisers took the decision to close the show a day ahead of schedule "to ensure the safety and welfare of the public, traders and exhibitors".

Two of the showground's car parks were closed on Monday evening after drivers had to be towed free. A further 30 acres (12 ha) of barley and hay fields were mowed to provide additional parking on the Tuesday.

The decision was described as "heartbreaking" by the Royal Agricultural Society of England. John Moverley, RASE Chief Executive, said the financial implications of the wet weather and closing the show early were being assessed. “We haven’t got exact figures, but it looks as though we are down by about 10% for the first two days on last year,” he said.
End of an era for Royal Show
Apr 3, 2009

This year's Royal Show will be the last organisers said.

The annual agricultural show has been hit in recent years by the foot-and-mouth disaster in 2001, the very wet summer and flooding in 2007 and the arrival of bluetongue into the UK.

The Royal Agricultural Society of England (Rase) said the event was no longer economically viable and would not continue in its present form after this year.

This year's Royal Show, the 160th, will still go ahead at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, this summer.

The chairman of the trustees, Hugh Oliver Bellasis, said the decision had been a real challenge, but the society had been left with little choice.

"In the aftermath of the foot-and mouth-disaster in 2001, closely followed by very bad weather two years ago and bluetongue last year, the event has struggled - both financially and in its ability to attract both farming and non-farming visitors," he said.

But he urged people to come to the final show between July 7 and 10, enjoy the livestock, horses, technical features and shopping and "bid a fond farewell to an event that has long been held in great affection by farmers and others who work and live in the British countryside".

The Rase intends to create a new programme of events from 2010, including taking elements of the Royal Show for inclusion in other events.
